THE PARTIES IN COURT: The electronics giant Apple and a struggling company that denies it sold rights to the iPad name in mainland China.

THE HEARING: It took place in Shanghai and adjourned after a fractious four-hour session. The judge repeatedly admonished both sides to observe proper court protocol as they argued across the courtroom.

THE ARGUMENTS: Apple insists it holds the trademark rights to the iPad in China, having purchased them from Shenzhen Proview Technology's Taiwan affiliate through a company set up for that purpose. A lawyer for Proview argues that the 2009 sale was invalid.
