DANBURY -- If you long for sardine and kale soup, also called calde verde, or a linguica sandwich, head to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish at 149 Deer Hill Ave.

The parish is holding its 36th annual Santo Cristo Festival this weekend. On Sunday at 4 p.m. there will be a procession from the church to Main Street and back. Music will start at 7 p.m. and dancing at 8.

The festival celebrates Portuguese music, culture and food, from bifanas -- steak sandwiches -- to malassadas -- fried dough.

"That's the best,'' said Juliet Wilkins, who has been attending and working at the festival since she was a child, and therefore knows about fried dough. "Melts in your mouth.''
