DANBURY -- Vaishali Chandola, a junior at Danbury High School, and Cooper D'Agostino, a junior at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, are among 30 students in the state who will be recognized as Governor's Scholars on Thursday at the Aqua Turf in Southington.

The Connecticut Association of Schools and Big Y World Class Markets sponsor the program, which is in its 16th year.

Principals nominate one junior in the top five percent of his/her class and then the nominees complete an essay.

This year they answered the question "What dangers do societies face when there is a dependence on media and technology rather than face-to-face contact as a means of communication?"

The Governor's Scholars Committee assigns a composite score to each rank in class, plus PSAT or SAT scores, CAPT scores for public school candidates, and the student essay.

The 30 students with the highest scores are named scholars.
