DANBURY -- Quick work by Danbury firefighters Sunday saved the contents of a tractor-trailer transporting the belongings of a Massachusetts family to their new home in Texas.

The blaze, which apparently broke out beneath the trailer portion of the 53-foot trailer, snarled traffic on Interstate 84 westbound near Exit 2 for more than an hour.

The incident forced State Police to detour vehicles into the far left lane while firefighters battled the flames and off-loaded some of the contents of the truck, Assistant Chief Bernie Meehan said.

Three engine companies, a ladder truck and two tankers responded to the call, which came in about 12:45 p.m.

Meehan said the truck carried all the family's belongings, and firefighters had to remove about one-quarter of the contents to make sure the flames hadn't spread to the contents.

The road was fully reopened after about 90 minutes.
