Police officer killed in crash

A 28-year-old Hartford police officer and veteran of the Iraq war was killed in a single car crash in Hebron early Friday, police said.

Officer John Marvin was killed in the crash, which happened shortly after midnight at Routes 85 & 94.

"The City of Hartford mourns the loss of Officer John Marvin, and our heartfelt prayers are with his loved ones on this painful day,' said Mayor Pedro Segarra. "The fine men and women of the Hartford Police Department risk life and limb daily to protect our City, and every loss deeply impacts us all."

Segarra ordered all city flags to be lowered to half-staff in Marvin's memory.

Marvin was in the Navy from 2002-2008, including a tour serving in Iraq.

While in the Navy, Marvin received a number of medals, including The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal And the Navy Good Conduct Medal.

After completing his service with the Navy, he worked part-time as a Sergeant in the Connecticut National Guard, according to Col. John Whitford, the National Guard public information officer.

Marvin graduated from the police academy in July 2009, and joined the Hartford Police Department on Dec. 14, 2009, Segarra said.

According to the mayor, Marvin's father, John, is retired from the Manchester Police Department and his brother, James, currently serves with the Hartford Police Department.

According to state police, Marvin's car was traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 85 when it went off the road at the `T' intersection with Route 94 and struck an earthen embankment.

Marvin was not wearing a seatbelt.

The officer was not on duty at the time.

The intersection was closed to traffic until the accident was cleared around 5:00 a.m.
