<![CDATA[ LOS ANGELES (AP) — The FBI was working with Mexican authorities Wednesday to bring a former University of Southern California professor arrested at a Caribbean beach town back to California to face charges of traveling abroad to engage in sex crimes with children.

Walter Lee Williams, 64, who was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list on Monday, is charged in the U.S. with sexual exploitation of children and traveling abroad for the purpose of engaging in sexual acts with children.

Federal authorities believe Williams fled to Mexico once he learned of the investigation against him, according to court documents filed to seal the indictment until he was taken into custody.

[...] February 2011, Williams was a tenured professor at the University of Southern California where he taught history, anthropology and gender studies. ]]>

<![CDATA[ CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's top Muslim cleric declared Wednesday that peaceful protests against the president are permitted, in a snub to hard-line Islamist backers of Mohammed Morsi who declared that those behind opposition protests planned for June 30 are heretics.

In a statement, Sheik Ahmed el-Tayeb, the grand imam of the Al-Azhar mosque, stuck strictly to the question of whether Islam allows the protests — while underlining that they must remain peaceful — without weighing in one way or another on their political substance.

[...] the high-profile comment by the influential cleric appeared to be a cold shoulder to Morsi at a time when the president has tried to garner Al-Azhar support, meeting with el-Tayeb as well as the Coptic Christian pope, ahead of the planned protests.

On the anniversary of his 2012 inauguration, the Islamist president's opponents are aiming to bring out crowds nationwide demanding Morsi step down and early elections be called.

Morsi's office said that in the meeting, he "expressed his appreciation ... of how they can contribute to bolstering national unity and maintaining the nation's supreme interests, along with safeguarding the nation's security and stability."

In a television interview aired shortly before Morsi met with the two religious leaders, Tawadros again criticized the Egyptian leader, saying nothing has changed after one year in office to improve the life of ordinary Egyptians.

The June 30 protest campaign is rooted in a months-long petition drive called "Tamarod" — or "Rebel" — that claims to have collected up to 15 million signatures on a call for early presidential election. ]]>

<![CDATA[ BEIRUT (AP) — Hezbollah fighters joined Syrian forces in battling rebels in a Damascus suburb that is home to a revered Shiite Muslim shrine, in a push to secure the area around the ornate, golden domed mosque.

Protection of the Sayida Zeinab shrine has become a rallying cry for Shiite fighters backing President Bashar Assad, raising the stakes in a conflict that is increasingly being fought along sectarian lines.

President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders of the Group of Eight industrial economies meeting in Northern Ireland this week tried to narrow sharp differences between Russia, a key Assad backer, and Western leaders who support the rebels, but could not agree on whether Assad must go.

A French diplomat said Wednesday that officials from the United States and other countries in the so-called Friends of Syria group will meet in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday to respond to requests from rebel commander Gen. Salim Idris, who has outlined urgent needs, including sophisticated weapons, the diplomat said.

The Syrian uprising began in March 2011 with peaceful protests against Assad, but later grew into a civil war in response to a brutal military crackdown.

U.S. officials estimate that 5,000 Hezbollah militiamen are fighting alongside the regime, while thousands of Sunni foreign fighters are also believed to be in Syria — including members of Jabhat al-Nusra, an al-Qaida affiliate that is believed to be among the most effective rebel factions,

Buoyed by that victory, regime forces have been on an offensive to dislodge rebel fighters from areas they hold on the edge of Damascus and surrounding areas, as well as other towns in Homs and the northern province of Aleppo. ]]>
